Initially known as the FIFA Club World Championship in 2000, the event faced a hiatus from 2001 to 2004 due to various issues, including the collapse of FIFA's marketing partner ISL. However, since 2005, the competition has been held annually. Views on the cup's significance vary, with Europe showing less interest compared to South America. Starting off as a parallel event to the Intercontinental Cup in Brazil in 2000, the first FIFA Club World Championship was held alongside the Intercontinental Cup, recognizing both winners as club world champions. Subsequent to this, the Intercontinental Cup was integrated into the FIFA Club World Championship in 2005, leading to its rebranding as the FIFA Club World Cup in 2006. The champion of the tournament is awarded the FIFA Club World Cup trophy and a FIFA World Champions certificate. The tournament's current structure involves seven teams vying for the title over a two-week period in the host country. It includes winners from various continental championships like AFC Champions League (Asia), CAF Champions League (Africa), CONCACAF Champions Cup (North, Central America, and Caribbean), CONMEBOL Libertadores (South America), OFC Champions League (Oceania), and UEFA Champions League (Europe), in addition to the host country's national champions. The knockout competition also sees a play-off between the host nation's national champions and the Oceania champions, with the victorious team advancing to the quarter-finals alongside the champions from Asia, Africa, and North America. The quarter-final winners then face off against the European and South American champions in the semi-final round for a spot in the final. Real Madrid holds the record for the most championship titles, securing victory five times. Meanwhile, Corinthians' initial triumph stands as the best result achieved by a host nation's national league champions. Spanish teams have claimed victory in the tournament eight times, the highest tally by any nation. England boasts the most winning clubs, with four teams having emerged victorious in the competition. The reigning world champions are Manchester City, who clinched the title by defeating Fluminense 4-0 in the 2023 final.
