Libya

Despite never having qualified for the FIFA World Cup, the team has participated in three Africa Cup of Nations tournaments in 1982, 2006, and 2012. Notably, in 1982, Libya acted as the host and achieved runner-up status. Additionally, Libya secured second place in the Arab Cup in 1964 and 2012, as well as third place in 1966. The team holds affiliations with FIFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF). In international competitions, Libya has historically struggled compared to other North African teams such as Algeria, Morocco, Egypt, and Tunisia, primarily due to political challenges. The team's participation in the FIFA World Cup has never materialized, with sporadic appearances at the Africa Cup of Nations, totaling three qualifications. From the 2010s onwards, Libya's global ranking has seen improvement, attributed to an increasing number of Libyan players venturing into foreign leagues. A notable milestone was achieved in the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations, where the team clinched its first-ever tournament victory outside of Libya. Following this success, Libya's FIFA world ranking reached a peak of 36 in September 2012, while also securing a gold medal in the 2014 African Nations Championship. However, the outbreak of the Libyan Civil War resulted in the discontinuation of the Libyan Premier League, causing turmoil in domestic football affairs. Consequently, Libya faced elimination in the early stages of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Rwanda and failed to defend its title in the 2016 African Nations Championship.
